Planning a 3-day trip to Jaisalmer? Here's a day-by-day Jaisalmer itinerary with what it costs, where to stay and how to get there, ready to follow or make your own.

Why go now

Desert days are warm and nights cool from October to February, the only comfortable time for the dunes. The Desert Festival usually lands in February.

Jaisalmer rises out of the Thar Desert like a sandcastle: a 12th-century fort of honey-coloured stone that 3,000 people still live inside, surrounded by an old town of carved merchant havelis. Beyond the city, the dunes of Sam and Khuri are where most visitors spend a night under the stars with folk music and camel rides.

Day by day

Jaisalmer itinerary for 3 days

  1. D1

    Day 1: The golden fort

    Morning
Enter Jaisalmer Fort through Akhai Pol before 9 AM, while the lanes are quiet. Climb to the Raj Mahal palace museum and the cluster of 12th–16th century Jain temples, famous for their sandstone carving.
    Afternoon
Walk down to Patwon ki Haveli, the five-house merchant mansion, and Nathmal ki Haveli nearby. Lunch on a rooftop café facing the fort walls.
    Evening
Sunset at Vyas Chhatri, the cenotaphs on the hill west of the fort, when the whole city glows gold. Dinner of ker sangri and laal maas in the old town.

Fort lanes are steep and uneven; wear proper shoes.

  2. D2

Day 2: Lakes, ghost village and dunes

    Morning
Sunrise at Gadisar Lake, with its ghats and shrines reflected in the water. Breakfast nearby, then drive 18 km to Kuldhara, a village abandoned overnight in the 1800s.
    Afternoon
Check in at a desert camp near Sam (40 km). Rest through the heat of the day.
    Evening
Camel or jeep ride into the dunes for sunset, then a Rajasthani folk music and dance evening with dinner by the fire. Stay up for the stars; the sky is very dark out here.

Ask whether the camp is at Sam (lively) or Khuri (quieter) before booking.

  3. D3

    Day 3: Cenotaphs and bazaars

    Morning
Watch the sunrise over the dunes, then drive back to town via Bada Bagh, the royal cenotaphs lined up on a ridge with wind turbines behind.
    Afternoon
Shop in Sadar Bazaar and Manak Chowk for mirror-work textiles, leather juttis and camel-wool shawls. Lunch at a thali place below the fort.
    Evening
Catch the evening train or flight, or stay one more night inside the fort walls.
