The plan
Day 01 · Thu, Nov 19
Settle in with temples, cedar forest and café-hopping.
A four-tiered wooden pagoda temple from 1553, set in a forest of giant deodar cedars. The carvings around the doorway are the finest in the valley.
Local tip · Queues build after 11; go straight after breakfast.
Cross the Manalsu bridge into the old village for slow lunches of trout and Israeli plates, apple-wood houses and Himalayan views from café terraces.
Local tip · Most cafés are cash or UPI; card machines are hit and miss.
Old Manali's cafés host acoustic sets and open-mic nights through the season, the easiest way to meet other travellers.
Local tip · Places close by 11 PM under local rules; plan your walk back down.

Day 02 · Fri, Nov 20
Atal Tunnel to Sissu, then snow play at Solang Valley.
Drive through the 9-km Atal Tunnel under the Rohtang Pass into Lahaul's stark valley, with frozen waterfalls and snow fields around Sissu.
Local tip · Hire a local taxi; private Manali taxis are the only ones with valley permits. Check road status the night before.
Snow slopes for sledging, skiing lessons and paragliding in season, with the ropeway climbing to 3,200 m.
Local tip · Rent snow boots and jackets at Solang, not in Manali; it's cheaper and you avoid carrying them.
Back in town, walk the pedestrian Mall and eat Himachali siddu and trout at one of the dhabas off the main strip.
Local tip · Siddu, a steamed stuffed bread with ghee, is the local dish to order.
Day 03 · Sat, Nov 21
Rafting on the Beas and hot springs at Vashisht.
A 14-km run of grade II-III rapids from Pirdi, the classic Kullu rafting stretch, with guides and gear included.
Local tip · Rafting runs roughly Mar-Jun and Sep-Oct; it stops during the monsoon.
Stop at the Bhuttico weavers' co-operative to see handlooms and buy a genuine Kullu shawl with its geometric border.
Local tip · Co-op prices are fixed and the wool is genuine, unlike many roadside shops.
Soak in the sulphur hot-spring baths beside the old Vashisht temple, then dinner in the village.
Local tip · The public baths are separate for men and women; bring a towel.
Day 04 · Sun, Nov 22
A half-day hike to Jogini Falls before heading home.
A 3-km trail from Vashisht through apple orchards and pine forest to a 150-m waterfall sacred to the local goddess.
Local tip · Wear proper shoes; the last stretch is rocky and slippery.
The temple to the sage Manu, who gave Manali its name, sits at the top of the old village. One more café lunch before the road.
Local tip · Book overnight Volvo buses to Delhi a few days ahead in peak season.
A deodar park along the Beas for a last easy walk and paddle-boating on the small lake before your evening bus.
Local tip · Overnight buses leave from the private bus stand near the Mall around 5-7 PM.
